About

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, violist Jason Lan (Sheng-Chieh Jason Lan) made history as the youngest violist ever to present a debut recital at Taiwan National Concert Hall — performing to a sold-out audience. He began studying viola at the age of nine and has since built a distinguished international career as a soloist and chamber musician.

Jason holds a Master of Music degree from Tianjin Juilliard School in China and a Bachelor of Music from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of Texas at Austin, where he serves as a Teaching Assistant in Viola under Wilhelm Magner.

A prize-winner in Taiwan's national competitions and the 2024 Rising Star Concerto Competition, Jason has worked alongside members of the Juilliard, Takács, Miró, and Shanghai String Quartets, and has studied with luminaries including Nobuko Imai, Donald McInnes, and Richard O'Neill.

Jason Lan has been selected as a candidate for the prestigious Concours de Genève 2025, one of the world's most celebrated international music competitions. His online recital (Session 5) broadcasts September 10, 2025.

Award

1st Prize — Rising Star Concerto Competition 2024

Jason Lan was awarded First Prize in the 2024 Rising Star Concerto Competition, performing William Walton's Viola Concerto as soloist with the Austin Civic Orchestra as part of UT Austin's Texas Rising Stars program.
